Description

Vintage four colour lithograph French poster print created by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec in 1893 (1864 – 1901, French).  Inspired by Japanese woodblock prints, Lautrec turned to poster design, developing the concept of the artistic poster in  the 1890s.

Wove paper.  Limited edition 930/ 2000 (created by the Sunday Times in 1968 and paper stamped “ST”).  This French art nouveau still poster is for sale mounted but framing can be arranged at cost.  Paper size 49.5 cm x 29.5 cm/ 19″ x 30″.

This poster advertised the comedic café-concert artist, Caudieux.  This unflattering portrait shows the performer as aging, overweight and camp and wearing a dinner jacket and heavy makeup.  Caudieux was nicknamed the ‘Human Cannon.’ Toulouse-Lautrec has ruthlessly captured the bulk of him prancing across the stage with an gaunt looking face in the orchestra pit below.
