Charles Méryon was a French printmaker, born in Paris. Colour blind, he excelled at etching, trained by Alexandre Bléry, and depicting mid-19th-century Paris. He lived a tragic life, suffering with mental ill health and hallucinations, his mastery not recognised till after his untimely death from suicide.
